General purpose spill kits help contain and clean up everyday spills involving water, coolant, oil and other non-aggressive liquids. Available in 40L to 240L sizes, these kits include absorbent pads, minibooms, MAXSorb floorsweep, protective gloves and disposal bags. Suitable for workshops, warehouses and plant rooms, they provide practical spill response solutions and can be restocked using general purpose absorbents.Â

A general purpose spill kit is the default choice where no single liquid dominates. The absorbents are hydrophilic, meaning they take up water alongside oil and coolant, so one kit covers a workshop floor holding hydraulic oil, antifreeze and washdown water. That breadth is the point. Specifying an oil-only kit for a site with mixed liquids leaves gaps, and holding three separate specialist kits in a small workshop is rarely warranted.
The trade-off is worth understanding before specifying. Because these absorbents take up water, a kit used outdoors or on wet concrete will saturate with water before it reaches its rated capacity on the product you are actually trying to contain. For hardstands, bowsers and anywhere exposed to rain, an oil and fuel kit is the better fit. General purpose kits are not intended for aggressive chemicals, so sites holding acids or alkalis need hazchem absorbents instead.
Kit sizes step up with the scale of the spill rather than the volume stored. The 40L kit is a carry bag with one miniboom, 20 pads and 5kg of floorsweep, sized for a single decanting point or a vehicle. The 80L adds four minibooms, 50 pads and a brush and pan set for a drum store or plant room. The 240L kit moves into a labelled wheelie bin, carrying seven minibooms, 100 pads and 10kg of floorsweep for bulk storage areas. Position kits where spills actually happen, check contents on a routine schedule, and restock from refill kits after any use.
A general purpose spill kit holds absorbents that take up water as well as oil and coolant, along with gloves and disposal bags. It covers the broadest range of liquids from a single kit.
Water, coolant, oil and most non-aggressive liquids. They are not intended for aggressive chemicals such as acids and alkalis, which need a hazchem kit instead.
Size against the largest credible spill at that location. A single decanting point or vehicle may only need 40L, a drum store suits 80L or 120L, and bulk storage areas warrant 240L.
A 75mm miniboom, 20 absorbent pads, 5kg of MAXSorb premium floorsweep, elbow-length PVC gloves, a printed disposal bag and a labelled PVC carry bag, with an instruction sheet and reorder form.
General-purpose absorbents absorb water as well as hydrocarbons, so they suit mixed indoor liquids. Oil and fuel absorbents repel water and take only hydrocarbons, which keeps them working outdoors and on wet ground.
It can, but it will saturate with rainwater before reaching capacity on the product you are containing. For hardstands, bowsers and exposed areas, an oil and fuel kit performs better.
The terms are used interchangeably across the industry. Both describe absorbents suited to a broad range of non-aggressive liquids rather than a single product type.
Yes. Refill kits restore the absorbent contents without replacing the bin or bag. Loose pads, minibooms and floorsweep can also be bought separately as everyday stock.
It is the granular absorbent in the kit, scattered over a spill to lift residue once the bulk has been taken up. It also restores traction on a surface left slippery.
Yes, that is what the PVC carry bag is for. The 40L and 80L travel to the spill, while the 240L wheelie bin is sited and wheeled rather than carried.
They carry the hazard of whatever they have taken up, so they need bagging, labelling and disposal in line with the requirements for that liquid at your location.
Usually yes. The kit should stay sealed for emergency response, while routine drips are better handled with loose pads and rolls kept in the workshop.
