Hazchem spill kits are designed to contain and clean up spills involving acids, alkalis and other hazardous chemicals. Available in sizes from 40L to 240L, these chemical spill kits include specialised absorbents and protective gloves for chemical spill response. Suitable for laboratories, manufacturing facilities and chemical storage areas, the range includes portable kits, larger wheelie bins and refill options to complement chemical storage cabinets.

With aggressive chemicals, the absorbent itself has to survive contact. General purpose and oil grade pads are not made for acids and alkalis, and using them on a corrosive product can break down the absorbent, release what it has taken up, or generate heat. Hazchem absorbents are manufactured to hold those products, which is why a chemical spill kit is a different specification rather than a larger version of the same thing.
PPE is the second consideration. The kits include elbow-length PVC gloves, and depending on the chemicals held, responders may need additional protection such as eye and face protection. The safety data sheet sets out what is required, which makes it part of the response rather than an afterthought. Kits should sit near the storage area so the SDS, the kit and the spill are never far apart.
Sizing follows the same logic as the rest of the range, driven by the largest credible release rather than the total volume held. The 40L kit covers a single decanting point or a small store. The 80L and 120L kits suit a bunded chemical store or a laboratory. The 240L kit in a labelled wheelie bin is the specification for bulk storage and drum compounds, and refill kits for the 80L, 120L and 240L restore the contents after use without replacing the bag or bin. Check that the absorbents in any kit suit the specific chemicals you hold, since hazchem grades vary by manufacturer.
A hazchem spill kit holds absorbents selected for aggressive chemicals such as acids and alkalis. It is specified by chemical compatibility rather than by volume alone.
General purpose absorbents are not made for corrosives and can degrade on contact. Hazchem absorbents are built to hold those products.
Acids, alkalis and other aggressive products, within the compatibility range stated by the manufacturer. Always check the absorbent against the specific chemicals held on your site.
Size against the largest credible release at that point. A decanting station may only need 40L, a laboratory or bunded store 80L to 120L, and a drum compound or bulk store 240L.
Yes. The SDS tells responders what the product is, what protection is required and what the compatibility limits are. Keep it accessible wherever the chemical is stored and the kit is positioned.
Not necessarily. Absorbent compatibility varies, and a site holding a broad chemical inventory may need more than one specification. Check against what is actually stored.
Yes. Refill kits are available for the 80L, 120L and 240L, restoring the absorbent contents without replacing the bag or bin. Loose hazchem absorbents can also be bought to keep stock on hand.
Elbow-length PVC gloves. Depending on the chemicals held, responders may need additional protection such as eye and face protection, which the safety data sheet will specify.
Yes, where corrosives are stored or handled. A general purpose kit is not made for acids and alkalis, so reaching for the wrong one during a chemical spill can make the situation worse rather than better.
A saturated absorbent carries the hazard of the chemical it has taken up and is classified accordingly. It needs bagging, labelling and disposal through arrangements suited to that class of waste.
They will take up hydrocarbons, but it is an expensive way to handle a fuel spill. Oil and fuel absorbents are the economical choice where hydrocarbons are the risk.
They should sit with the chemicals they serve rather than in a general store, alongside the safety data sheets, so the information and the response arrive together.
